Purina is well known for its cat products, which made me want to test out their popular cat litter, Yesterday’s News Litter. It’s actually a pretty interesting litter with unique materials and ingredients made with it. But not to worry, they’re still safe for your cat to use, and I expect nothing less from a product made by a respectable company like Purina.

But is Yesterdays’ News worth getting today? I decided to do the research and tests myself to help out those who are confused with what kind of litter to get. So read on as I show you the points to consider with Purina’s Yesterday’s News Litter and if it’s something you should invest in for you and your cat today.

You’re probably wondering: Why’s it called Yesterday’s News in the first place? Even I was a bit weirded out with its name until I learned what it was made of.

It’s actually made from recycled newspapers, which is claimed to be even more absorbent than the typical clay litter. But it still imitates the similar texture of clay, making it attractive to cats so they are more encouraged to do their business there.

Made by Purina and coming at such a low price, it’s interesting to see just how efficient recycled newspaper is in terms of odor control and clumping. At least we know that it comes from a biodegradable and eco-friendly material!

Tracking and Dust-Free

One feature many appreciate with the Yesterday’s News Litter is the fact that it tracks really well. Because it has a larger pellet size, it doesn’t stay stuck between cat paws, making it stay inside the box rather than track outside the area.

And because of the slightly larger pellets, it doesn’t have as much dust as other cat litters do. This is great for those who are sensitive or have allergies. I’ve had no sneezes nor have my cats suffered from allergies when dealing with the litter. For its tracking and dust-free features, this is a huge plus from the cat litter.

Its Clumping Abilities

With this cat litter, don’t expect it to be the best at clumping, though I still commend it for actually staying solid and absorbing moisture as well as it does.

It can absorb moisture really well and urine is no problem. As for feces, there’s a bit of a problem as it doesn’t stay as solid as it claims.

It crumbles a bit easier and isn’t too dry when clumping feces. However, it’s still adequate enough to scoop and as long as you handle it with care, it won’t be much of a problem.

But of course, the clumping is the main feature of cat litter and it disappointed me a bit. As there are cat owners that wanted to have non tracking litter, you can freely choose from my recent reviews about the best non tracking litter.

Odor Control and Scent

While Yesterday’s News Litter comes with a good host of features at a more affordable price, I did have some complaints.

The major issue I had with the litter was its bad odor control, particularly with the unscented litter varieties it had to offer.

Because it’s not the absolute best in clumping, the odors from both feces and urine will spread around the box and area. It did its best to keep the odor within the litter, though there was still sharp smells of ammonia.

As for the scented litter, it was an improvement. You don’t smell much of the fees or ammonia, and the perfume wasn’t overpowering. This is why the scented variety is better in terms of odor control juts like the arm and hammer.

How to Use and Clean

I appreciate the fact that the Yesterday’s News Litter comes with a variety of different packages so I’m able to get one according to my budget and the weight I prefer to make it easier to refill.

It has good packaging to make it easy to pour the contents to the box.

As for cleaning, I do have some troubles with scooping because it doesn’t clump as well when it’s a multi-cat and high-traffic litter box.

Moisture absorption is still good enough for its price and does well in staying solid enough when only one or two cats use it. Besides this, the litter doesn’t track, which is a plus in terms of cleaning.

Brand and Price Review

Purina is really a well-known brand, which is what makes their products, including this cat litter, a trusted one. It still stays true to its quality and though it isn’t the best, Purina impresses for its extremely low price for cat litter.

And it comes at such an affordable price! Sure, you get what you pay for and there are its limitations, but it still continues to do a job well done in giving your cats an adequate toilet for them to do their business.

It isn’t the top of the brand, but adequate enough and better than having to let your cats do their toilet trips outside.

Where Can You Get It?

Fortunately, Purina’s Yesterday News Litter is accessible and easy to find, may it be in physical or online pet stores.

As for those who are looking for coupons or newsletters about it, you’ll be a bit surprised- Purina doesn’t have its own website or newsletter dedicated to the litter.

However, you can still find a lot of information about it and where to get it online. Purina has it on sale online and in websites like Amazon, making it more accessible for those worldwide.

Plus, it still comes at similar prices, if not cheaper from online deals.

Are There Any Issues?

Yesterday’s News Litter is definitely a nice choice because of its price, but remember, you get what you pay for when it comes to products like these. Unfortunately, it comes with quite a few disadvantages as well.

One major problem is its odor control, which I mentioned above. Its unscented cat litter varieties do NOT control odor at all and it would smell of ammonia strongly. Furthermore, while it does clump, it doesn’t do so well and crumbles easily, which isn’t optimal when scooping and cleaning up.

Another major complaint is that these aren’t made for automatic cat litter boxes and that the pellets have a darker color, making it difficult to see any bits of cat feces leftover in the box while cleaning.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Doesn’t track at all and is dust-free
  • Great for those who are sensitive or with allergies
  • Can choose between different weights
  • Amazing moisture absorption for urine
  • Made of recycled newspaper for eco-friendliness
  • Comes at a very affordable price

Cons

  • It doesn’t clump as well as other litters
  • Not the best odor control for unscented litter
  • Dark colors make it a bit difficult to clean
  • Large pellets not the best for small scoopers
  • Not recommended for multi-cat litter boxes

What The Cats Think

The cats were indifferent with Yesterday’s News Litter. It performed similarly to clay litter and had the same texture, so they enjoyed it just the same as they would with typical litter I give them.

Because the litter feels soft, they experienced no discomfort as they walked around the box to do their business.

Besides this, there was no tracking or any dust stuck to their paws, which was surprising coming from a cheaper litter.

However, the odor was a different thing, as it smelled a bit strong even after their toilet trip. Because of this, it discouraged them from using it until replacement or when the smell’s intensity lessened.

My Own Verdict

Overall, I feel like Yesterday’s News Litter is made best for those who are on an extremely tight budget. Because of its low price, it may seem enticing, but I would rather add a few more dollars if you’re looking for something with better odor control abilities, especially if you have more than three cats!

While I do like that it’s made from such a unique and eco-friendly material, I wouldn’t rave about it as much as I do other cat litters.

BUT, I give it plus points for the way it performs in other aspects, from its dust-free features and lack of tracking. If ease of use and cleanliness is what you’re after, you might want to consider this.

Wrapping It Up

Yesterday’s News Litter is one of the most unique products I’ve tested for cats. Made with old and recycled newspapers, it puts a new twist to recycling and making the world a better place with its environment-friendly and biodegradable materials.

While it does have some issues with odor control with urine, I still believe it to be a worthy investment for all cats, sensitive or not.

I hope that my review on Yesterday’s Cat Litter helped you make your decision on what to get for your cant today! So don’t wait any longer and begin looking into what more Purina has to offer now.
