When I moved into my first apartment more than 20 years ago, I was young, excited about the future and more than a little relieved to be out of my parents’ house.

It wasn’t long before I realized that something was missing: you see, I’d always had a cat as far back as I can remember.

For you cat lovers out there, you can probably relate when I say life just isn’t the same without a cat by your side – or sleeping on your bed, or sleeping in your closet, or.. just sleeping.

Even though my apartment was small and I didn’t have a reliable vacuum to suck up all of the fur, I knew that I needed a cat companion. So, I went in search of the perfect breed.

While cats are pretty good at chillin’ there are certain breeds that are better suited for apartments than others.

Here Are The 7 Best Apartment Cats

1. Manx

The most distinguishing characteristic of a Manx is the absence of a tail. They are believed to date back to 1750 and originate from the remote Isle of Man, an island off of the coast of Britain. A genetic mutation is believed to cause the tail-less feature. These cats mature at a slower rate than other breeds, and may not reach maturity until they are five years old. Once they reach adulthood they are of average size, about 8 – 12 pounds. They are known as ‘mousers’ and have kept their hunting skills sharp throughout the years. Expect them to be vocal when they hear something out of the ordinary. They may even hiss or growl at unusual sounds. Normally, though, expect your Manx to be friendly and mellow. She likes serene surroundings, so kids and dogs may not be the best companions for them. When you’re seated comfortably in your favorite chair, your Manx will jump on your lap and get comfortable with you. She’ll even carry on a conversation with you. These are very intelligent cats that can learn tricks and will walk on a leash if taught early. Unlike most cats, a Manx is very sociable and will be grateful for your time and attention.

2. Siamese

It’s hard to mistake a Siamese for any other breed because they have very distinguished features. From their crystal-blue eyes to their unique coloring, Siamese cats look as sophisticated as they act, almost like they’re ready to go out to a formal function in their pale suit with dark accessories.

Siamese cats have been known in Thailand for centuries, but arrived in the West sometime in the 19th century. Siamese cats are chatty and opinionated. They will tell you exactly what they think, and they expect you to listen. If you’re looking for a lap cat, a Siamese will definitely suit your needs.

They are sociable and don’t like to be left alone for long periods of time, so if you work during the day, consider getting two of them so they can keep each other company. Don’t worry, you’ll hear all about their day when you get home! Siamese are loving and loyal cats who need lots of attention and entertainment.

3. Persian

Far too dignified for menial things like chasing mice and playing with toys, the Persian makes a quiet and docile pet. This is one of the oldest cat breeds on record, going back thousands of years, originating in Persia which is now modern-day Iran.

She will add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your apartment, no matter where she decides to get comfortable, which is usually your lap.

They are affectionate, but only with family members and visitors whom they feel they can trustThey prefer quiet environments so an apartment can be a great fit for them, especially if you are gone during the day. She will let you know when she wants something, but is not overly demanding.

She’s not one to climb curtains, or jump on top of countertops, and you won’t find her on top of your refrigerator when you get home.

There’s no need, as she can rule her roost right from her spot on the floor! With wide expressive eyes and a beautiful coat of fur, it’s going to be tough to deny her what she wants!

4. Russian Blue

Sometimes known as the “Doberman Pinscher of cats,” Russian Blue breeds have a sleek but muscular body. It’s unclear whether or not the breed actually comes from Russia, but with its thick coat, it surely originated from colder climates.

They have a gentle, laid-back nature, but they love to play with their humans, especially retrieving games.

They also love to jump and frolic, so don’t be surprised if she jumps up onto the countertop or shelf. While not destructive, she will entertain herself during the day with the elegance and grace of a ballerina. These are best suited for quiet and stable environments.

5. Ragdoll

This breed came along in the 1960’s and is originally from California. These long hair cat breeds have a mix of Himalayan, Persian and Burmese personalities.

They have beautiful long coats and are gentle and easy-going. They are among the most affectionate breeds, often leaping into your arms when you come home from a long day at work.

They will follow you around the house and they can learn tricks for both of your enjoyment and entertainment. They are quite docile but also love to play and frolic in the family’s activities. They are very good with children and are not excessively vocal, unless they are reminding you of mealtime.

6. British Shorthair

These have a quiet and undemanding nature, making a great companion for anyone who does not have a lot of space and for those who want a mellow and easygoing pet.

While they enjoy affection, they are not a ‘hey listen to me’ kind of cat. She’ll sit next to you but won’t often jump on your lap, giving you your space.

She isn’t fond of being carried around so don’t expect to be able to pick her up on a regular basis. As a kitten, she’ll be quite playful, but she’ll settle down into a normal cat routine at about a year old, becoming less active. They will welcome guests and behave as if they were raised by a proper governess.

7. Exotic Shorthair

These beauties have been around since the 1950’s and are every bit as regal as their Persian cousins. They exude all of the personality traits of a Persian, but come in a short, easy-to-clean coat. While docile and quiet, she loves to play and will be a loyal companion for you and your entire family.

They can entertain themselves if you’re away for much of the day, but love toys that they can bat at and chase. They are very affectionate and aren’t very vocal, unless they are reminding you that it’s dinner time. They love to be picked up and paid attention to.

Unlike dogs, cats don’t need a lot of space to run around, and you don’t have to worry about keeping them in a kennel while you’re away. Regardless of which breed you choose for your apartment, you can rest assured that your cat will show their affection in unique ways.

It might be rubbing against your leg when you get home, jumping into your arms, or chewing on your plants, but those are all signs that say, “Yes I tolerate you, human.”

You’ll know when you’ve been accepted into their family because they will give you a lazy, long-blink look when they’ve awoken from their slumber. You may even hear them purr from the other room when they know you’ve arrived home. Ah, yes, there’s nothing like being owned by a cat.
