I have two indoor cats and one of them is really a big guy. He weighs 18 pounds and he’s not overweight. He’s a beast. My other cat is normal. They both are long haired. Why does any of that matter? WELL LET ME TELL YOU we live in a really small 1 bedroom apartment and there are absolutely zero good places to put our box. At our old house, we kept it in the bathtub of our guest bath. This house, it’s under our dining room table. AND we only have one box! Yeah I know that’s pretty gross but there’s really no better options here and my cats are okay with sharing.
This. Litter. Is. Amazing. You’d never be able to tell that we have two cats. This litter is super light weight and it works so well. No weird smell even when it gets wet. Clumps pretty well but I’m not too picky about clumping as long as something works. It is flushable and I have flushed it with no problem. I typically just scoop it into The paper grocery bags I save from shopping and throw it away with the yard waste.
This litter lasts a really long time. I use one box a month and scoop daily. I empty the whole litter box about every 2 weeks. That would have been way too long with any other litter that I’ve tried. Which is literally every litter imaginable, natural and clay.
This stuff is unscented and has very little dust, if any, which is great since I have asthma. Even the smell of cat pee can make me wheezy but I have no issues with this at all.
It’s really light weight. I could throw the whole box across the room if I wanted to. With it being so light, there is some tracking but it’s not too bad at all. Nothing a broom can’t handle. Clay litter was way worse. It also doesn’t stick to my floor, the box, or to my cats fur or paws.
I have nothing negative to say about this stuff. Not even anything neutral. 100000% great and worth it.
My reasons for loving it:
1. Tracking - To be fair, this litter does still track a little bit. That being said, not much and what does track blends in very well with my hardwood floors and light carpet. If someone were to walk in my house they wouldn't be like, "wow, disgusting, a trail of pee gravel from the cat litter box." Instead the small, light chips just look like maybe you were doing a craft or unboxing something and a little natural product fell out. There is absolutely nothing that looks or feels gross about seeing a few tiny wood chips on your floor.
2. My cats like it! I transitioned the kittens by mixing half of their old litter with oko and they didn't seem to notice at all. My latest street kitty had never used a litter box before, but the wood chips were earthy and familiar enough to her that she started using it instantly.
3. No dust!! This is especially important to me as I have a curious ferret who LOVES digging in clean litter and I'm always concerned about what those little lungs are taking in.
4. The scent (mixed review, but overall positive). When I first poured oko, I was afraid it was going to permanently smell like my guinea pig's cage growing up. The scent is woody and piny and wholesome/natural, but let's face it - those are not natural scents for being inside a city home, so it takes a bit of adjusting. That original scent calms down after the first pour, and soon you only really smell it when you're close to the litter box. Now, my cats are SMELLY and I almost INSTANTLY know when they have pooped. There is no subtlety or vagueness in the air. ... or, at least, there wasn't when I was using clay litter. This beautiful litter really does absorb the smell almost instantly! I have not smelled cat poop in weeks. ...With that said, I have smelled some weird, other smell, which smells a bit like... uhhh... sweet and sour rotting grass? I'm not sure how to describe it. Maybe it's the clumping agent mixing with that kitty stench, and it truly does not smell like poop... but it also does not smell great. This keeps me scooping pretty frequently, but that's probably a good thing. I don't notice it for urine, just with defecation. Overall, though, the smell is preferred to a traditional litter box and I still consider it an improvement.
5. SO EASY TO SCOOP AND DITCH! I bought a larger scooper from Amazon and I just have to maybe do two quick, giant scoops and I've got all those little doodies and clumpers. From there, I just walk to the trash or occasionally the toilet and - swish - my troubles are biodegrading themselves away. (Note: if you don't have a toilet that flushes particularly powerfully, the chips can cling to the toilet bowl and kiiinda look like someone had too much vodka, threw up in the bowl, and was too drunk to fully clean up afterwards.. but it still disappears with another flush or two)
6. SOOOO much better for the environment! After much research, this seems like the most sustainable, affordable option on the market. That alone would make it worth buying, and all the above options are just the cherries on top.
If you're on the fence about giving it a try - my vote is to order it and help keep you and your kitties happy and the world healthy!
