THE MEOWKAI FIELD NOTES

A closer look before you carry.

A transport carrier, a home enclosure, and a harness solve different problems. Start with the job you need the item to do, then check the exact opening, usable space, secure closures, and cleaning instructions.

Choose the product type first

Type Its role Check before choosing
Transport carrier Containing a cat while being carried or transported, within its stated use. Carrying method, secure closure, usable interior, ventilation, and manufacturer weight limit.
Home enclosure or playpen Providing an enclosed space when assembled in an appropriate location. Assembly, spacing, access, stability, and supervision requirements. Do not infer a carrying function.
Harness and leash A wearable restraint used as its instructions allow. Actual adjustable fit range and fastening. It is not a contained transport carrier.

Our travel department includes the Dextrus two-tier enclosure and a five-piece starter kit that includes a carrier. The enclosure’s levels and doors do not establish that it can be lifted with a cat inside. The kit’s useful bundle count does not establish its carrier’s internal dimensions or transport suitability. Check the individual component details rather than choosing by the department name.

Five details that change the purchase

1. Usable space

Cats Protection recommends a carrier that lets a cat lie comfortably and change position. Record the usable internal floor and height, including any space taken up by a mat. An outside length or a “small pet” label is not an internal measurement. A stated maximum weight is a load limit, not a complete fit guide.

2. Opening and closure

Compare front access, top access, and a removable upper section. Cats Protection notes that opening arrangements affect both loading and training. Ask for the doorway measurement and instructions for securing every latch. A zip or latch visible in a photograph does not establish how it operates.

3. Ventilation and visibility

Cats Protection recommends ventilation openings on at least two sides. Check their location on the actual model. Do not choose from a decorative shape alone, or cover openings in a way that obstructs ventilation.

4. Carrying and cleaning

Check which handles or straps are intended to carry the occupied carrier and follow its load guidance. Read the cleaning instructions for the shell, insert, and removable parts separately. A washable insert does not make the whole carrier machine washable.

5. The actual journey

For a flight or another operator-controlled journey, check the current operator’s requirements directly for your route and booking. A supplier phrase such as “airline approved” does not confirm acceptance by every airline. For a car journey, follow the carrier manufacturer’s instructions about transport and secure placement; a shoulder strap is not evidence of a vehicle restraint system.

Keep an exact-model worksheet

Copy these questions into your shopping notes, or print this guide. Fill unanswered fields with “not confirmed,” then ask about that exact product.

  • Identity: model, size option, and included components.
  • Dimensions: inside floor length and width; inside height; opening width and height.
  • Load: stated maximum occupied weight and permitted carrying points.
  • Access: front or top opening; removable top; latch or zip instructions.
  • Care: shell-cleaning method; insert-cleaning method; replacement-part availability.
  • Journey: your operator’s current requirements, where applicable.

A useful support question: “For this exact size, what are the usable internal floor dimensions and doorway measurements, and can the top be removed according to the instructions?” This is more specific than asking whether a carrier is “large enough.”

Meowkai’s supplier-based comparisons do not claim that we have transported a cat in each product. We call out missing details so you can check them before purchase.
