THE MEOWKAI FIELD NOTES

Room for the box. Room for your cat.

A FOOTPRINT CHECK

Start with the space at home.

Use one unit throughout. Enter the outside dimensions of the box and your own extra allowance for access and cleaning.

Your available space
Box outside dimensions

The allowances are totals across both ends or sides. Measure drawer travel and lid access yourself; zero means no extra clearance has been reserved.

Your space check will appear here.

This is a floor-space calculation. It does not assess your cat’s fit, entrance height, internal space, overhead clearance, or comfort. Changing the unit label does not convert the numbers; re-enter measurements in the selected unit.

A litter box has more than one size. Its outside footprint determines where it goes; its usable interior and entrance determine how it can be used. Measure those separately before treating a “large” or “jumbo” label as an answer.

Record four different measurements

Measurement What to record What it does not tell you
Outside footprint Maximum assembled length and width, including projecting handles or steps. Usable space inside the pan.
Usable interior Base length and width inside the walls; note tapering sides or a curved back. Ease of getting through the entrance.
Entrance Opening width, opening height, and the step-over height from the floor. Headroom beneath a hood.
Working clearance Drawer travel, lid swing, and the space needed to reach in with a scoop. The product’s assembled footprint.

A tapered pan can be widest at the rim and narrower at the base. A hood adds outside height without making every part of the interior equally tall. If a listing only supplies assembled dimensions, mark the interior and entry as unknown instead of subtracting an assumed wall thickness.

Make a full-size footprint before ordering

  1. Mark the listed length and width on the floor with removable tape or a paper outline. Include the maximum projections.
  2. Stand where you would scoop and remove the pan. Measure the extra space required to pull a drawer or open a lid fully.
  3. Check nearby furniture, door swings, floor trim, and overhead shelves. The planner above only calculates length and width.
  4. Keep the route into and out of the box in view. Rotating the footprint can change where the entry or drawer faces.

A worked example: a 24 × 18-inch footprint plus 8 inches of extra length and 2 inches of extra width needs 32 × 20 inches. A 30 × 22-inch space is too short in that orientation even though the bare box would fit. These are illustrative measurements, not a clearance standard.

Compare a real format difference

Petmate’s jumbo Hi-Back pan has an open top and a higher rear wall. Petmate’s large hooded pan adds a cover and door. The first distinction is access and cleaning arrangement, rather than a promise that one will contain all litter or suit every cat.

For the Hi-Back pan, the listed overall dimensions are 23.08 × 18.80 × 12.10 inches. Its front step-over measurement is not separately verified on our page. Do not use the 12.10-inch overall height as the entrance height. For the hooded model, ask about internal headroom, doorway size, and whether the door can be removed according to the instructions.

Our AsterOutdoor large black stainless-steel pan page flags conflicting entry descriptions in the source listing. An attractive material or a “senior” label should not override that unresolved question. Confirm the opening before ordering when access is the deciding factor.

Finish the check with your cat in mind

Cats Protection advises choosing a tray that provides adequate room for a cat to turn and use it comfortably, and notes that tray and litter preferences vary. A box that fits the room may still fail that practical check.

  • Compare the usable interior with the space your cat needs to move, rather than the outside rim alone.
  • Check the approach and step-over height against your cat’s normal movement. For a mobility concern, discuss the setup with your veterinarian.
  • Consider whether the open, hooded, or entry arrangement matches the way your cat already uses a tray.
  • Keep the cleaning route and regular access workable in the chosen location.

Record unknowns and ask for the actual measurement. A product photograph does not provide a reliable scale. The planner’s result is a geometric space check, not a suitability assessment; its inputs are not sent or saved.
